The second phase of the special traffic operation for Holy Week commenced on Wednesday and will run until Monday. The General Directorate of Traffic, known as DGT, anticipates around nine million long-distance journeys during this period. To mitigate traffic congestion, the DGT has set up alternative routes, specifically designed to avoid the busiest areas of the country during this time. Authorities encourage users to avoid crossing through urban centres known for heavy traffic.
In addition to the long journeys, the DGT has increased vigilance on shorter trips along secondary roads. Enhanced checks on alcohol, drugs, and speeding have been implemented to ensure motorist safety. Drivers are also advised to pay close attention to weather reports due to unstable conditions and the state of the roads. Reports of accidents are currently higher, urging the DGT to remind users of the importance of caution and adherence to traffic regulations.
As of Thursday evening, multiple accidents involving vehicles travelling in the wrong direction have resulted in fatalities and injuries in AndalucÃa, contributing to heightened alarm this holiday season. With the recent statistics noting fifteen fatalities on interurban roads since the operation’s initiation, the DGT reinforces the necessity of responsible driving. Major traffic flow disruptions were noted on key routes, particularly in and out of major cities, causing extended delays across several roadways.
Despite certain congestion points, general traffic conditions have, according to the DGT, been manageable thus far. Additional lanes and altered routes have been implemented to aid smoother traffic flow and prevent accidents. However, drivers should remain alert as various regions continue to experience heavy traffic and isolated incidents.
