The Guardia Civil has made significant strides against international arms trafficking with the arrest of a man in Burgos. Authorities seized twenty-five AK-47 rifles, one machine gun, and one hundred twenty-six hand grenades, marking one of the largest weapons caches in European history. The operation involved collaboration with France, Bosnia, Austria, Slovenia, and Spain.

Investigations began following the interception of a transportation of arms travelling through Austria from Bosnia to France. The illicit shipment consisted of an extensive arsenal, which included an MG-42 machine gun, a pistol, and over twenty-five kilograms of ammunition, intended for sale to criminal organisations in France.

Following this discovery, a coordinated effort led by Europol and Eurojust resulted in the simultaneous arrest of seven alleged members of the criminal network across France, Spain, and Bosnia. One of the arrested individuals is a Spanish national with links to both arms trafficking and other criminal activities, arrested in Burgos.

The detained man has since been placed in judicial custody and awaits extradition to France for trial. Authorities have highlighted that this operation effectively prevented the arms from reaching criminal organisations, underlining the importance of international cooperation in tackling serious organised crime.
