Irene Montero, European Parliament member and former Minister for Equality, has accepted the proposal from Podemos leader Ione Belarra to lead a left-wing candidacy for the forthcoming general elections. At an event dubbed ‘For Peace and Against the War Regime,’ Belarra stated Montero’s leadership is crucial at this critical juncture, declaring that only a brave and pacifist woman can tackle the challenges ahead. Montero welcomed the invitation, affirming the need to build a coalition for peace and rights.

Belarra expressed discontent with the current government and called for the candidacy to extend beyond Podemos to other anti-war groups and disillusioned citizens. She believes that this unification is vital for Spain to return as a bastion of peace. Montero reinforced these sentiments, urging members to commit to the task of establishing a campaign focused on hope, rights, and a robust left.

Belarra also critiqued Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for his handling of current geopolitical tensions, particularly focusing on the impact of tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump. She accused Sánchez of lacking the courage to confront US hedge funds and called for a decisive break from American influence in Spain’s strategic sectors. The leader additionally discussed the looming consequences of the Ukraine conflict, stating that only the United States is benefiting from the ongoing turmoil.

In her remarks, Montero condemned the European Union’s rearmament plan, labelling it as robbing essential public services, not a technological advancement. She warned that escalating militarism could fuel the rise of the far-right in Spain. With a vision that aligns with peace rather than partisan politics, Montero aims to reshape the political landscape away from traditional bipartisan agreements, advocating instead for a stronger left committed to social advocacy.
