A tragic explosion at the Cerredo mine in Degaña, Asturias, has resulted in the deaths of five individuals. Officials report that the blast took place around nine thirty in the morning. Emergency services were dispatched after a ‘problem with a machine’ was reported. While four others suffered injuries, two people initially thought to be missing were later accounted for.
The victims were residents of the northwest province of León, aged between thirty-two and fifty-four. Local hospitals have received the injured for treatment, while the mining rescue brigade has deployed its canine unit to assist in the situation. The mine had previously been closed in two thousand eighteen but has since been used intermittently for mineral extraction.
At present, authorities have not disclosed the total number of people present at the mine during the explosion. Asturian President Adrián Barbón has ordered two days of mourning in light of the tragedy. Additionally, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences to the bereaved families through a message on X, wishing a speedy recovery to those injured during the incident.
With the region’s civil protection plan activated at its lowest level, local resources are being mobilised to manage the incident effectively. As investigations continue, officials are working to gather more details about the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
