Ángel Víctor Torres, the Minister of Political Territory and Memory Democracy in Spain, announced on Sunday that he has been diagnosed with cancer, which he confirmed is operable. Torres revealed his plans to undergo surgery at the end of April, stating, ‘We will return stronger.’ He reassured the public that he will remain active in his duties until the surgery and expressed his determination to face the challenge ahead.

During his speech at the PSOE congress in Gran Canaria, Torres remembered those who also face similar health battles and emphasised the importance of science and healthcare services. He said, ‘Prevention is essential.’ Sources from the government confirmed that Torres’ responsibilities would not be delegated and he would continue to lead his department.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed support for Torres, calling him ‘one of the most brilliant and committed public servants’ he has known. Other officials, including the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and Manuel Domínguez, the leader of the regional PP, also offered their encouragement and wishes for a swift recovery.

Born in Gran Canaria in nineteen sixty-six, Torres began his political career as a local councillor in nineteen ninety-nine, later serving as mayor. He reinstated PSOE’s governance in the Canary Islands in two thousand nineteen and was appointed as a minister in November twenty twenty-three. Torres’ resilience and commitment to public service remain evident as he prepares for treatment.
