Four individuals are facing severe legal consequences for their alleged neglect of elderly residents at a care home in Sant Quirze del Vallès, near Barcelona. The prosecution claims that these individuals neglected the needs of twenty elderly residents between two thousand fifteen and two thousand sixteen, resulting in conditions of severe malnutrition and extremely poor hygiene. The trial commenced recently in the fifth section of the Barcelona Audiencia and could see the accused sentenced to up to forty-seven years in prison.

The allegations specify that the defendants implemented cost-saving measures by distributing fewer meals than required, leading to food shortages among the residents. Instead of providing twenty-four meals for the twenty-four residents, they only provided eighteen. This practice, the prosecution argues, left the elderly in a dire state, lacking adequate nutrition and basic hygiene care, thus undermining their dignity.

Documents presented in court indicated that the care facility had been accredited by the Generalitat of Catalonia, receiving partial funding for the care it provided. However, following multiple sanctions, the authority revoked its accreditation in February two thousand seventeen, leading to the transfer of the residents to a different facility. Reports of the care home highlight the inadequate investment in nutrition, with residents suffering from health issues due to insufficient food intake.

An inspector from the Generalitat has testified concerning the alarming health deterioration observed upon transferring the residents. Her evaluation noted that several of the residents were gravely malnourished, highlighting a serious neglect of care standards within the facility. The ongoing trial has drawn attention to broader issues of elder care in the region, particularly during challenging times.
