Santos Cerdán, the former Secretary of Organisation for the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), has applied to the Supreme Court for his release after spending seventy days in preventive custody. Cerdán, who entered prison on the thirtieth of June as a suspect in the Koldo case regarding alleged bribery in public works contracts, argues that the investigation lacks limits and targets activities typical of political participation.

His legal team has submitted written requests to the Supreme Court today, seeking to have him released from detention. Cerdán’s defence team also filed an appeal to the Constitutional Court, asking for the revocation of the provisional prison order.

The lawyers criticised the judicial process, describing it as “strongly procedurally tensioned,” and contend that the ongoing investigation is infringing upon the rights of their client as a politician. They believe the situation is becoming increasingly untenable, and Cerdán’s rights need to be safeguarded against misuse of judicial power.
