A flotilla of roughly twenty ships has set sail from Barcelona, carrying humanitarian aid and activists in a bid to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. This significant maritime convoy, comprised of delegations from forty-four countries, is set to deliver vital supplies including food, water, and medicine to the besieged region where rampant hunger persists due to ongoing conflict. The flotilla is anticipated to reach Gaza by the fourteenth or fifteenth of September.
The mission draws attention to the dire conditions in Gaza, where over half a million people face catastrophic levels of hunger, as highlighted by food experts earlier this month. Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, a prominent figure among the activists, emphasised the urgent need for international support to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians. She previously attempted to reach Gaza in June but was deported by Israeli authorities.
Thousands of supporters gathered at the Barcelona pier to send off a variety of vessels, chanting slogans such as ‘Free Palestine.’ The fleet, which could potentially swell to around seventy boats, is set to join vessels departing from ports in Italy and Tunisia in the coming days.
Despite previous attempts to breach the blockade being met with military resistance, including incidents where Israeli forces intercepted boats and seized aid, activists remain determined to push forward with this mission. The situation in Gaza remains tense, with Israeli officials indicating that they will further restrict humanitarian aid as military operations continue to expand in the region.
