The humid weather and recent rainfall have provided Spanish authorities with some much-needed relief in their battle against wildfires that have devastated large areas of the country. So far this year, data from the European Forest Fire Information System indicates that over three hundred and ninety-one thousand hectares have already been burned. Although forty fires remain active, the rain, especially in León, has boosted firefighters’ ability to manage the situation effectively.
Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, president of the Castile and León region, reported that firefighting efforts have seen significant progress due to improved weather conditions. Additionally, an aid plan has been announced for those affected, which offers five hundred euros for evacuees and up to one hundred and eighty-five thousand euros for those who have lost their homes. Mañueco emphasised that conditions are now advantageous for extinguishing fires as efforts are being focused where they are most needed.
In the north of Spain, firefighting units from Germany have joined the battle, dispatching over twenty vehicles to assist local teams combating a significant blaze in Jarilla, in the Extremadura region. Meanwhile, the environmental impact of wildfires has worsened air quality across Spain, with smoke travelling as far as France, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavia, according to the EU’s Copernicus climate monitoring agency.
In neighbouring Portugal, more than three thousand seven hundred firefighters fight multiple severe blazes, with about two hundred and thirty-five thousand hectares burned, indicating an alarming increase compared to historical averages. Reports indicate that the wildfires have claimed two lives in Portugal. The ongoing crisis is further complicated by evidence that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of droughts and heat waves across Europe, thereby heightening the risk of wildfires.
