In a tragic incident on the waters off Mallorca, one man has died, and three others are reported missing following the capsizing of a migrant boat. The vessel, carrying over twenty individuals, encountered difficulties and left its passengers adrift for six days. Emergency services mobilised at around three-thirty in the afternoon, successfully rescuing nineteen people, one of whom had been recovered earlier by a private boat.

The rescue effort was launched after a survivor, who is of sub-Saharan origin, reported that he had been travelling with twenty-three others. The maritime authorities located the wreck around one hundred and fifty kilometres south of Mallorca at approximately one-fifty-five in the afternoon. Tragically, the efforts of the rescue teams revealed that one person had perished, while three are still unaccounted for, believed to have tried swimming to shore.

According to the latest statistics, over two hundred and thirty boats have reached the Balearic Islands in 2025, transporting more than four thousand four hundred and thirty migrants. Most of these migrants are of Maghreb and sub-Saharan origin. The numbers indicate a worrying trend in the region, as the volume of irregular maritime arrivals has surged by seventy-seven per cent in the Balearics, contrasting with a general decrease across mainland Spain.

This afternoon, the Balearic president, Marga Prohens, is set to convene a meeting with representatives from all four island councils – Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera – to discuss the ongoing migrant situation in the archipelago.
