A relentless heatwave is currently sweeping through southern Europe, igniting dozens of wildfires and compelling thousands of people to flee. Areas in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, and the Balkans have issued red heat alerts, warning of significant health risks as temperatures soar above forty degrees Celsius. Spain is particularly hard-hit, with weather forecasts predicting that cities like Seville and Cordoba could reach highs of forty-four degrees Celsius.

In Spain, the wildfires have already claimed lives, with a worker dying from severe burns near Madrid. The military has mobilised almost one thousand soldiers to assist with firefighting efforts, while rescue services are striving to extinguish the flames that threaten both homes and significant cultural sites.

Portugal’s situation is equally dire, as approximately one thousand three hundred firefighters and multiple aircraft are currently tackling numerous wildfires. Additional support has arrived from Morocco in the form of waterbombing aircraft to assist local teams. Red heat alerts have also been issued for sixteen cities in Italy, where a tragic incident resulted in the death of a child from heatstroke.

As the heatwave continues to grip parts of Europe, scientists caution that global warming is intensifying the Mediterranean climate, leading to hotter and drier summers and consequently, longer fire seasons. The impacts of this ongoing crisis are also being felt in the UK, now facing its fourth heatwave of the year, with temperatures hitting thirty-three degrees Celsius and health alerts in effect nationwide.
