A seasonal worker has tragically passed away in Alcarràs, Lleida, after feeling unwell while working on a nearby agricultural estate. The incident took place on Monday afternoon, around five o’clock, coinciding with a peak in an ongoing heatwave where temperatures exceeded forty degrees Celsius in the region.

Emergency services, specifically the Sistema de Emergències Mèdiques (SEM), were alerted to the situation and promptly arrived at the scene; however, they were unable to revive the individual. The authorities, including the local police force, Mossos d’Esquadra, are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

As they await the results of an autopsy, officials have yet to ascertain whether the cause of death was a heat stroke, which would classify it as a work-related accident, or if the worker had pre-existing health conditions. A spokesperson for the Alcarràs Town Council confirmed that they were informed of the worker’s death through Mossos d’Esquadra.

This incident highlights the dangers associated with extreme weather conditions, particularly for those working outdoors, and raises concerns about health and safety regulations in agricultural practices during heatwaves.
