On the tenth of June, a major electricity blackout swept across La Palma, halting daily life and operations on the island. The outage occurred just after half past five in the afternoon, stemming from issues at the Los Guinchos power plant, which is over fifty years old and considered obsolete. This event is not isolated, as La Palma has experienced multiple blackouts recently, leading to increased frustration among residents and local leaders alike.
Sergio Rodríguez, the island’s president, took to social media to highlight the widespread impact, noting that the old power plant’s failure resulted in a cascading collapse of the energy grid. Local businesses, already struggling to rebound from the volcanic eruption of Cumbre Vieja in 2021, reported significant economic losses due to interrupted services, with many unable to process digital transactions and experiencing damage to electronic equipment upon power restoration.
There is a burgeoning call for a change in La Palma’s energy strategy. Activists and business leaders are urging for an investment in renewable energy infrastructure to halt reliance on the existing thermal power system. Despite being termed a ‘green island’, La Palma currently utilises only about ten percent of renewable energy sources. Experts are advocating for a more sustainable model to ensure the island’s economic viability and independence from fossil fuel imports.
As the community grapples with persistent power issues, both corporate and ecological voices are demanding accountability from government authorities. They are pressing for a comprehensive energy policy that not only supports renewable energy initiatives but also addresses the broader economic challenges faced by the island. The European Commission has recognised La Palma’s potential for achieving one hundred percent renewable energy by twenty thirty, fostering hope for a significant transition ahead.
