A small acrobatic plane has tragically crashed into the sea off Puerto de Sóller, located in the north of Mallorca. The incident occurred on Saturday evening after the aircraft took off from Binissalem aerodrome around six o’clock. The Deputy Mayor of Sóller, Carlos Darder, reported that the plane crashed approximately one hundred metres from Cap Gros, indicating that it was a two-seater aircraft and that it seems likely only one person was aboard.
Emergency services were alerted to the crash around eight fifty-two in the evening, following numerous witness reports stating they had seen the plane descend into the water. Just before that, a call was made at eight oh seven to the Baleares emergency services by someone who witnessed the accident occurring in front of the Sóller lighthouse. Several boats in the area also reported seeing the crash.
The Guardia Civil confirmed the discovery of wreckage from the aircraft but has not provided details on the number of people who were on board at the time of the incident. In response to the crash, the Guardia Civil established a forward command post with emergency services present, which included the provincial maritime service, the underwater activities special group, and participation from Mallorca’s firefighters.
The search and rescue operation involved various agencies, including the helicopter unit and judicial police teams from Algaida, along with public safety indicators from Calvià, to ensure a thorough search for any potential survivors or further evidence related to the accident.
