The commissioner for the reconstruction of areas affected by recent flooding, Ángel Batalla, has resigned amidst a controversy regarding the authenticity of his qualifications. His resignation follows an investigation into alleged falsification of his academic credentials. Vice President María Jesús Montero has endorsed his decision, asserting that it was the right move, particularly amidst ongoing discussions about the veracity of public officials’ qualifications.
Montero remarked that it is vital for all public officials to act exemplarily, highlighting that Batalla’s replacement will be Zulima Pérez Seguí, who has previously played an essential role in the reconstruction efforts. This leadership change comes as the political debate intensifies, with the People’s Party leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, demanding accountability, stating that falsifying a qualification entails criminal responsibility and urging the Prime Minister to reclaim any misappropriated funds.
In contrast, the Minister of Science and General Secretary of the PSPV-PSOE, Diana Morant, has shown strong support for Batalla, asserting his dedication to the victims of the flooding. She emphasized that Batalla’s decision to resign was to preserve his honourability, while also underscoring his commitment to serving the Valencia community in his various roles.
In light of the circumstances, the PP has further escalated the situation, calling for the resignation of other officials and raising concerns about their qualifications as well. The ongoing dialogue surrounding the oversight and management of the reconstruction efforts is set to continue in the wake of these developments, with regional leaders pushing for effective collaboration moving forward.
