Eighteen passengers were injured following a fire aboard a Ryanair aircraft at Palma de Mallorca Airport early this morning. The incident took place shortly after midnight as the flight was preparing for departure to Manchester. The fire reportedly erupted while the Boeing 737 aircraft remained grounded, leading to a chaotic evacuation where many passengers exited via the wings and jumped onto the tarmac in panic.
Emergency crews responded quickly after the flight crew made an emergency call. Eyewitnesses described a scene of distress, with individuals shouting as they attempted to escape. Local emergency response units arrived shortly after the alert, sending ambulances to provide medical assistance to those injured during the evacuation.
Ryanair confirmed that the flight was aborted due to a false fire warning light indication. Following standard evacuation procedures, passengers were disembarked using inflatable slides, with six individuals transported to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. Thankfully, there were no severe burns or life-threatening injuries reported.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, with aeronautical safety officials examining flight logs and maintenance records. Despite the alarming situation, the prompt response from the crew and emergency services likely prevented more serious injuries.
