A cleaning worker from Barcelona died on Saturday evening following her shift during a severe heatwave. The woman, in her fifties, had completed her regular working hours from two until nine in the evening in the Ciutat Vella district. Hours later, while at home having dinner, she collapsed and could not be revived despite emergency assistance.

Local authorities, including the City Council of Barcelona, are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her untimely death. An autopsy will be conducted to determine if heatstroke was the cause. Officials have conveyed their condolences to the deceased’s family and friends.

Lluís Lampurdanes, Secretary of Community Services at UGT Catalunya, stated the worker had completed her duties normally. UGT has reminded their staff to adhere to heatwave protocols which include working in shaded areas and staying hydrated.

Catalonia is experiencing a heatwave this weekend, with temperatures in the Barcelona area significantly exceeding thirty degrees Celsius. As of now, there are no other health incidents reported related to the extreme heat.
