The Ministry of Interior has confirmed an early start to the Forest Fire Fighting Campaign for twenty twenty five, set to begin on June first. This decision was made during a meeting of the State Committee for Coordination and Management of Forest Fires, chaired by Fernando Grande-Marlaska. Participants from various administrations discussed the current meteorological conditions and fuel moisture levels, leading to the early activation to bolster response capabilities.

Typically commencing on June fifteenth, the campaign’s adjusted start date reflects heightened preparedness among firefighting resources. These resources include Brigades for Forest Fire Reinforcement and a fleet of large capacity water bombers operated by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. The plan also incorporates the Military Emergency Unit and coordinated operational groups from the National Police and Civil Guard.

During the meeting, a report was presented on the outcomes of the twenty twenty four campaign, revealing that approximately forty seven thousand seven hundred eleven hectares were affected by wildfires last year, significantly lower than the ten-year average. However, five fatalities were recorded, including a member of the firefighting teams. The Minister emphasised the importance of remembering those lost while calling for increased efforts to maintain positive trends in firefighting outcomes.

The campaign also addresses the growing risk of Urban Interface Wildfires due to urban areas near forested regions, which pose threats to homes and infrastructure. Preventive evacuations last year affected over six thousand six hundred individuals, highlighting the necessity for continued vigilance in areas at risk. International collaborations are also in place, enhancing Spain’s firefighting efforts through partnerships with various countries in line with the European Civil Protection Mechanism.
