This Sunday, thousands of people took to the streets of the seven Canary Islands to voice their concerns about tourist overcrowding. Social groups, environmentalists, and citizens who initiated similar protests a year ago gathered once more under the slogan “Canaries have a limit,” demanding a shift towards more sustainable tourism practices. Marches began simultaneously around eleven o’clock and featured messages highlighting the need for ecological awareness and sustainable living conditions.

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the initial rally cry was directed at local authorities, while in Las Palmas, demonstrators focused on housing access issues and called for the halt of projects deemed incompatible with the island’s ecological goals. Participants highlighted how over forty percent of properties in some areas are dedicated to tourist rentals, pushing locals into precarious living situations. Further calls for action included the establishment of a public consortium to provide water through renewable energy sources.

Additional protests across the islands addressed various grievances related to urban development, environmental degradation, and housing scarcity. Activists demanded immediate halts to destructive projects and a focus on true sustainability that puts local residents’ needs above tourist interests. This movement against unchecked mass tourism reflects growing anxiety over the limits of the islands’ resources.

The protests drew significant participation, with reports indicating that over twenty-three thousand individuals attended, including numerous families and local organisations. Tenerife saw the largest turnout with fifteen thousand participants, while other islands also demonstrated strong support for the cause. Activists are determined to continue this fight for ecological balance and social justice in the Canary Islands.
