Today, teams from the Huelva Provincial Consortium of Firefighters successfully recovered three bodies from a vehicle submerged in the canal of the River Piedras in Cartaya. The car was discovered overturned, and initial investigations indicate it may have veered off the road.

Emergency services were alerted early this morning by the Civil Guard, prompting immediate deployment to the scene on road HU-3401. Firefighters faced challenges due to the canal’s depth and strong current but utilised neoprene gear and safety ropes for the recovery.

Local authorities confirmed that the deceased were young men, with at least one victim aged twenty-five. Mayor Manuel Barroso expressed condolences to their families and declared three days of official mourning, during which flags will fly at half-mast and all leisure activities will be suspended.

An investigation by the Civil Guard is ongoing to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. No possibilities have been ruled out as they examine the evidence at the site.
