The Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Function, Óscar López, has expressed his concern over the recent publication of private WhatsApp messages between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and former secretary of Organisation of the Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), José Luis Ábalos. The report by El Mundo reveals discussions that suggest Sánchez requested Ábalos to silence internal criticism within the party. López has labelled the leak as serious and has called for an investigation.
During a recent gathering, López characterised the release of these private communications as a part of an ‘infamous campaign’ against the Prime Minister. He reiterated that this type of disclosure, which has no relation to any legal case, is unacceptable and deserves scrutiny just like other leaks. López asserted that the government would continue to advance despite attempts to undermine it.
The comments come on the heels of remarks from Elías Bendodo, the Vice Secretary for Autonomous Coordination and Local and Electoral Analysis of the People’s Party (PP). Bendodo described Sánchez as authoritarian and suggested that the leaked messages shed light on the internal struggles within the PSOE.
This saga reflects ongoing tensions in Spanish politics, as the opposition seizes the opportunity to critique Sánchez’s leadership and governance. Observers are following this story closely, particularly as it may influence the political landscape leading up to upcoming elections.
