The Ministry of Culture has published the 2024 Cinematography Statistics report, offering insights into film production, exhibition, distribution and promotion. The report reveals an increase in films screened across the country’s three thousand five hundred and sixty-six cinemas, with two thousand four hundred and three films shown this year, including seven hundred and thirty-five premieres, marking a year-on-year growth of two percent in both films exhibited and premieres. With over seventy-two million cinema-goers, the total box office revenue reached four hundred and eighty-four million Euros.

Spanish cinema has experienced significant growth in 2024, showcasing a notable rise in audience figures and revenue. The one thousand six hundred and fifty-eight Spanish films screened attracted over thirteen million viewers, leading to an increase in earnings to eighty-five million Euros. These gains represent a rise of one point two percent in viewer numbers and four percent in box office earnings. In contrast, foreign productions faced a decline in viewer numbers by six percent, attributed to external factors such as the writers’ strike in Hollywood in twenty twenty-three.

The report indicates that Saturdays were the most popular days for cinema attendance, followed by Wednesdays, with the highest box office incomes recorded over weekends. The resurgence of Spanish cinema can be linked to the strong representation of Spanish productions at major international film festivals, where films such as Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” won prestigious awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

Additionally, the report reveals a gradual reduction in the gender gap within the film industry. In twenty twenty-four, forty-six point five percent of Spanish feature films included female contributions in direction or scripting. Notably, twenty-nine point eight percent were directed or co-directed by women, alongside forty-four point seven percent featuring female scriptwriters, reflecting a marked improvement of four point seven percentage points compared to twenty twenty-three.
