Motorcyclist fatalities continue to be a significant issue in Spain as eighty-one motorcyclists have lost their lives on the roads since the beginning of January 2025. This number is almost identical to last year’s figure of eighty-two fatalities during the same period. The Spanish Traffic Authority, or DGT, expresses concern over these statistics, noting that motorcyclists represent only fifteen percent of the vehicle fleet but account for twenty-five percent of all road deaths.

To address this alarming trend, the DGT, along with motorcycle associations and the Mapfre Foundation, has introduced a campaign focusing on advanced rider assistance systems, known as ARAS. This initiative includes a multimedia guide designed to inform motorcyclists about cutting-edge technology that can enhance their safety on the roads. The guide will be made available online over several weeks.

Álvaro Gómez, director of the DGT’s Road Safety Observatory, emphasised the need for innovations with ARAS to reduce motorcyclist fatalities. The guide, supported by technology company Bosch and motorcycling champion Dani Pedrosa, will explain how modern safety features, such as advanced braking systems, traction control, and emergency call features can help. Despite existing regulations for cars concerning advanced safety measures, similar rules for motorcycles have yet to be established.

Experts estimate that such advanced technologies could decrease accident-related deaths among motorcyclists by up to thirty percent. As fatalities have risen sharply for motorcyclists over the last decade, significantly outpacing improvements in car safety, the DGT’s initiatives aim to save lives and reduce the number of serious injuries from traffic accidents. In 2024 alone, three hundred motorcyclists were among the one thousand one hundred fifty-four recorded fatalities on Spanish roads.
