The government of Spain continues its investigation into the power outage that left both Spain and Portugal without electricity on April twenty-eighth. Vice President and Minister for Ecological Transition Sara Aagesen indicated that a loss of generation occurred nineteen seconds before the national blackout. This first loss was followed by two additional disturbances in the southwest, leading to the critical failure of the energy system.
Aagesen explained that the network managed to withstand the initial disturbance, but could not cope with the subsequent fluctuations. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are examining over seven hundred fifty million data records from various operators. They are keeping all possibilities open, including the chance of a cyberattack, as they continue their work transparently.
The Vice President has stressed that early investigations suggest no single facility failed in isolation. Instead, she pointed to a more complex interplay of factors contributing to the outage. Aagesen firmly rejected claims that renewable energy sources were to blame, dismissing such analyses as overly simplistic and emphasising the need for a comprehensive examination of all variables.
As part of preventative measures, the government is seeking to enhance Spain’s interconnections with France, acknowledging that current connections fall short of European goals. Meanwhile, reports indicate that a network overload in Murcia and Huelva may have played a role, with energy demands exceeding system thresholds, although Aagesen denied prior warnings about the risk of an outage.
