Félix Bolaños, the Minister of Justice, Presidencia and Relations with the Cortes, testified today in La Moncloa before Judge Juan Carlos Peinado as part of the investigation into Begoña Gómez, the spouse of the Prime Minister. The opposition Party Popular has reportedly called for Bolaños to resign, accusing him of damaging the integrity of his ministry and revealing what they describe as a failure of Spanish democracy.
Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo, co-spokesperson for the Party Popular in Congress, stated that the Minister’s testimony reflects poorly on his performance and the government. She used past criticism from the Prime Minister, regarding similar testimony from former Premier Mariano Rajoy, to argue for Bolaños’ resignation, suggesting he has weakened three government institutions at once.
In response to the investigation, government representatives are defending Bolaños, asserting that the judiciary’s work is flawed and lacks clear direction. Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska expressed concerns that the investigation jeopardises fundamental rights and may not achieve any substantial outcomes.
Álvarez de Toledo also highlighted a report from the Council of Europe that warns Spain is not fully complying with anti-corruption recommendations. She argues that the best way to combat corruption would be for the Prime Minister to call for elections, suggesting this would address the existing issues within the government. The opposition’s concerns continue to escalate, reflecting the tense political landscape in the country.
