In Washington, Carlos Cuerpo, the Spanish Minister of Economy, Commerce and Enterprise, met with Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary. The meeting aimed to strengthen economic ties between Spain and the United States. The discussions included a request for Spain to increase its defence spending in line with NATO requirements and the call for Spain to eliminate the so-called ‘Google Tax’.

The U.S. Treasury Department released a statement following the meeting, emphasising the need for Spain to align its defence budget accordingly. Bessent expressed ongoing opposition to the digital services tax imposed by Spain and other nations, stating it generates unnecessary trade barriers.

Cuerpo affirmed that the U.S. is interested in reaching a negotiated agreement with the European Union regarding tariffs. He described the meeting as a positive first step towards improved relations, noting the openness to negotiation highlighted by the recent ninety-day moratorium on tariffs proposed by President Trump.

The discussions were noted to be frank and constructive, focusing on trade matters and the international economic landscape, including China’s role. Cuerpo remarked that the conversations contribute significantly to mutual interests and the future of commercial relations between Spain and the United States.
