A tragic helicopter accident has occurred in the Hudson River, near New York, resulting in the deaths of five members of a Spanish family and an American pilot. The deceased included Agustín Escobar, a Siemens executive, his wife Mercè Camprubí, and their three young children aged ten, eight, and four. The pilot, Seankese ‘Sean’ Johnson, was thirty-six years old and had served in the military.

The National Transportation Safety Board, responsible for the investigation, has reported that the helicopter lacked recording systems and cameras. Investigators are currently examining the flight control system as they strive to understand the cause of this devastating crash. Recovery efforts are underway to find more parts of the helicopter, believed to be submerged approximately twelve metres deep in the river.

Witnesses described seeing parts of the helicopter’s fuselage fall during the crash, which took place around three fifteen local time on Thursday. Emergency teams, including divers from local fire departments and police, promptly mobilised to rescue victims and recover the wreckage. Family members of the deceased gathered to pay tribute at the Hudson River, laying a floral wreath alongside local officials.

This tragic incident marks one of the worst helicopter accidents in the region in recent years, with at least thirty-two people having lost their lives in helicopter accidents in New York since nineteen seventy-seven. The last major accident occurred in two thousand nineteen, and this recent crash has brought renewed attention to helicopter safety in the area.
