The Ministry of Equality has confirmed that the murder of a forty-nine-year-old woman in Gran Canaria is classified as a case of gender violence. The woman was discovered in her home, bearing evident signs of violence. A forty-three-year-old man, identified as her partner, was detained by the National Police in Malaga. He is alleged to have asphyxiated the victim and is currently charged with homicide.

The woman was reported missing by her daughter, who resides on the mainland and became concerned after failing to contact her mother. Following a police investigation, her partner surfaced as a prime suspect, having fled to Malaga after the incident. Law enforcement agencies coordinated their efforts to locate and arrest him, ultimately apprehending him at a bus station.

Political condemnation of the murder has been swift, with the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo García, expressing utmost condemnation and condolences to the victim’s loved ones. The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has also offered his condolences to the victim’s family.

This tragic event marks the eighth woman killed by violence against women in 2025, adding to more than one thousand three hundred women murdered since 2003, the first official recording year. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging preventive measures and support for potential victims, highlighting the available helplines for those in need.
