President Pedro Sánchez has stated that Spain’s economy is strong enough to withstand potential recession risks posed by the trade war initiated by the United States. Speaking informally with journalists during his tour in Asia, Sánchez highlighted Spain’s positive economic position and the government’s crisis management capabilities, despite lacking state budgets for the current year. He reassured that the government plans to pursue state budgets if parliamentary groups reconsider their support.
On Tuesday, the Council of Ministers approved the mobilisation of seven thousand seven hundred and twenty million euros to provide certainty and support investment and liquidity for companies affected by tariffs. The Minister of Economy estimated that these tariffs could impact eighty per cent of Spain’s exports to the US.
Sánchez has backed the European Union’s position to negotiate solutions with the Trump Administration while encouraging a united response from all member countries. The European Commission is expected to unveil its plan to respond to the tariffs next week, contingent on member states’ validation of countermeasures.
Furthermore, Sánchez emphasised the importance of diversifying markets, advocating for strengthened commercial ties with Mercosur, and highlighting the EU’s need to shift its focus toward China. He noted Spain’s strategic position to foster balanced alliances between Beijing and Brussels, reinforcing Europe’s openness to new partnerships.
