A twenty-six year old man has appeared in an extradition hearing at a court in Portugal, linked to the murder of John George. Jonny Smyth, originally from Belfast, was named in international arrest warrants issued by Interpol after he fled Spain following the disappearance of Mr George. The body of John George was discovered by Spanish authorities in a remote lemon grove on seventh January, having sustained stab wounds and gunshot injuries to the chest and face.

Smyth was arrested in Portugal on Tuesday while staying in an apartment in the historic city of Braga. Prior to his arrest, Portuguese police conducted a surveillance operation. At the Guimarães Court of Appeal, Smyth did not oppose the extradition request.

It is anticipated that Jonny Smyth will be extradited to Spain within ten days of the hearing. After his appearance in court, he was remanded back into custody. This case continues to develop as authorities work on bringing justice for John George’s family and friends.
