In a significant operation, Portuguese and Spanish authorities have intercepted a narcosubmarine approximately five hundred nautical miles south of the Azores. This vessel was found carrying over six and a half tonnes of cocaine, destined for distribution across various European countries. The operation, named ‘Nautilus,’ stemmed from information provided by the Spanish Civil Guard and included collaboration from the National Crime Agency and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The operation highlights a concerning trend in drug trafficking methods, as this is the first interception of a narcosubmarine in open waters. The use of such semi-submersible vessels makes it challenging for authorities to detect and combat drug transport across the Atlantic, posing a significant risk to European countries. The arrested crew comprised individuals of Spanish, Colombian, and Brazilian nationality.

Authorities suspect the cocaine was intended for collection by high-speed vessels near the Portuguese coast. In response to this growing threat, the Portuguese Navy and Air Force executed the operation, ensuring the complete arrest of the crew and seizure of the drug. All detained individuals, along with the narcosubmarine and its cargo, were transported to São Miguel island in the Azores for further investigation.

The Spanish Civil Guard has increased efforts to combat cocaine trafficking by establishing a Maritime Intelligence Team within its Anti-Drug Central Group. This team aims to enhance information gathering about criminal organizations utilizing maritime routes for drug transport into Spain, as part of wider initiatives to dismantle drug trafficking networks across regions.
