The Government of Spain has taken a significant step by approving a record investment of two point five billion euros for scholarships for the academic year twenty twenty-five to twenty twenty-six. This funding, described as historic by the Minister of Education, Pilar Alegría, marks an increase of over one billion euros compared to the previous funding for the twenty seventeen to twenty eighteen academic year. The Government aims to enhance equal opportunities for young people, with approximately one million students expected to benefit from this initiative.

The new scholarship programme includes notable changes, including a two hundred euro increase in residence grants, raising the total to two thousand seven hundred euros for students relocating to pursue higher education. Minister Alegría highlighted the importance of this increase in supporting students, particularly those from rural areas. Additionally, the new regulations will consider students in higher artistic education as university students, allowing them the same access to financial aid, benefitting around seven thousand young people.

In conjunction with the scholarship announcement, the Government also highlighted progress in female employment, with the lowest unemployment rate for women recorded in February since two thousand and eight. Minister Alegría stated that measures will be taken to advance gender equality, in line with the upcoming celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the Beijing Declaration.

Furthermore, the Government has approved a national plan for improved monitoring of seismic, volcanic, and geophysical phenomena to better respond to natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis. This plan, developed by the National Geographic Institute, aims to enhance emergency management systems, drawing lessons from past events such as the volcano eruption on La Palma in twenty twenty-one, which had successful management strategies that avoided casualties.
