A gas explosion in the Asturias town of Mieres has left at least eighteen injuries, with three minors reported to be in serious condition. Emergency medical services quickly transported the injured to various local hospitals, including the Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias and the Álvarez Buylla hospital. The explosion occurred in a residential area and led to significant structural damage, prompting rescue efforts as firefighters worked to assess further risks.

The Government delegate in Asturias, Adriana Lastra, confirmed that no fatalities have been reported and stated that a safety perimeter of one hundred and fifty metres around the explosion site has been established. Ongoing excavations will determine if there is a gas pocket that could lead to another explosion. Investigators believe that ongoing construction work in the area may have inadvertently compromised gas lines.

Asturias President, Adrián Barbón, referred to the situation as a ‘miracle,’ considering the lack of more severe casualties.
