The Valencia City Council has enacted emergency measures in response to severe flooding affecting the region. Classes and outdoor events have been suspended for Tuesday and Wednesday, impacting over thirty municipalities, including Valencia, XÃ tiva, and Gandia. The decision comes after the Coordination Centre for Emergencies declared an emergency situation due to heavy rainfall, with rainfall exceeding two hundred litres per square metre in some areas.
Authorities urged the postponement of Fallas celebrations and advised residents to avoid non-essential travel. The Generalitat has issued alerts as significant rainfall continues, resulting in road closures and incidents across the region. In addition to suspending classes, local councils have also closed municipal cemeteries and markets, promoting teleworking in affected areas.
As of now, emergency services have responded to over one thousand incidents linked to the heavy rainfall, and the local police have intensified monitoring of riverbeds and potential flood zones. The situation remains fluid, and further measures will be implemented if necessary. Residents are advised to stay indoors and keep updated through official channels.
In related weather news, the Canary Islands are also experiencing extreme weather, leading to flooding and emergency closures. Although impacts have varied, local authorities are monitoring the situation closely to ensure public safety.
