Britain’s energy system operator, Neso, warned there could be tight days for electricity supply this winter, but said new battery storage should help meet demand. It noted imports from Europe could be drawn on when needed to support homes and businesses.

Neso said electricity margins are the strongest since 2020, but there could still be tighter periods requiring the use of standard tools or system notices. Early data point to tighter days in early December or mid-January. Petterson said: “A resilient and reliable energy supply is fundamental to our way of life.” The outlook notes this year’s margins are the strongest in six years and emphasises continued work with the energy sector to protect reliability.

National Gas said Britain has the gas supply capability to meet peak demand, even with outages, and demand is expected to be about 3% lower than last winter. High-demand days are still anticipated, but the market should operate as needed. Bryn-Jacobsen said: “As we head into winter, we remain confident in the resilience of our gas system and our ability to meet Britain’s energy needs during periods of peak demand.” The report notes a fall in storage capacity because the Rough site off Yorkshire no longer stores gas, and Centrica has warned it will decommission the facility without government support, increasing reliance on LNG imports to cover cold periods.
