Tories pledge to scrap Climate Change Act and pursue cheap energy
The Conservatives have pledged to scrap the Climate Change Act of 2008 and replace the framework with an energy strategy that prioritises cheap, reliable energy as the foundation for growth. Party leader Kemi Badenoch said the plan would remove what she described as the ‘failed targets’ and shift away from legally binding carbon budgets toward a new approach to energy policy. The Climate Change Act, introduced under Labour, set an emissions reduction path and five-yearly budgets; under Theresa May the party increased ambition to net zero by 2050. The Conservatives argued the Act pushed up energy bills, weighed on growth and supported wood-burning plants such as Drax, while moving British industry abroad.
