Guinness World Records unveils 70 unclaimed titles for 70th anniversary
Guinness World Records is marking its 70th anniversary by revisiting notable feats and introducing 70 records that have not yet been claimed. The first edition appeared on 27 August 1955 after a discussion in County Wexford, Ireland, in which Sir Hugh Beaver, then managing director of the Guinness Brewery, argued over the fastest game bird in Europe. Beaver and his hosts sought a reference to settle pub arguments and, in 1954, launched a project to compile a volume of facts before publishing what became the Guinness World Records. Over the years, thousands of records spanning sport, technology, the human body, collections and skills have been authenticated for the books, which have sold about 155 million copies worldwide. Guinness World Records is now celebrating 70 years by introducing 70 new records that have never been set.
