The UK is set to recognise a Palestinian state on Sunday, despite pressure from the United States and families of hostages held by Hamas. Sir Keir Starmer is expected to confirm the move after saying the situation had deteriorated since he urged Israel to change course over the summer. Ministers warn that ongoing Gaza offensive and a perceived rush to expand settlements in the West Bank threaten any chance of a two-state solution.

The Deputy Prime Minister, David Lammy, will represent the UK at the UN General Assembly. He said recognition reflects concern about West Bank expansion and settler violence, including plans for development that could undermine a two-state solution. He added that recognition would not legitimise Hamas and that the UK intends to press for the release of hostages and to widen sanctions on Hamas.

Reaction was mixed. A letter from hostage families warned that recognition could hinder efforts to secure their loved ones’ release. The move drew criticism in the United States and from some political figures at home, including Dame Priti Patel and Nigel Farage. US President Donald Trump, during a state visit to the UK, said he disagreed with the Prime Minister on recognition. The Muslim Council of Britain welcomed the decision but urged that it be paired with action, such as halting arms sales and supporting international justice mechanisms.
