New data from the RAC and the charger locator Zapmap show 1,001 EV chargepoints were added at 260 UK supermarket sites between January 2024 and June 2025, lifting the total number of supermarket chargepoints to 3,917. That represents a 34% rise since January 2024.

About 60% of supermarket charging locations offer rapid or ultra-rapid units, a feature the RAC describes as a key part of the rollout for drivers who do not want to spend long in-store or rely on slower public chargers. Public charging points at supermarkets account for about 5% of the UK’s total. An estimated 1,876 supermarkets provide EV charging, around 14% of all supermarkets, including those without car parks.

Simon Williams, RAC head of policy, said concerns about a lack of public chargepoints are a common reason drivers hesitate about buying an EV, and he welcomed the expansion by retailers. He added that faster installations by retailers and continued government incentives could help more drivers switch to electric motoring. Melanie Shufflebotham, founder and chief operating officer of Zapmap, said: ‘It’s great to see major supermarket chains continuing to invest in this area. We’ve long been advocates of charging when you can rather than when you need to, and these locations, especially those providing high-powered charging, offer just that.’ ‘For retail sites, including supermarkets, EV provision has a significant positive impact on traffic and dwell-times, so meeting the needs of the EV drivers of today and tomorrow makes strong commercial sense.’ A Department for Transport spokesperson said: ‘We’re bringing down the cost of going electric and giving people the confidence that they can charge up easily – whether they’re at home, at work, or out and about.’
