Thames Valley Police has outlined a 24/7 policing operation using drones over Windsor during the US president’s state visit. Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are due to be hosted at Windsor Castle from 17 to 19 September, with a ceremonial welcome and state banquet. A temporary airspace restriction will be in place from 16 September, when the visit rehearsal takes place, until 18 September, preventing non-police drones and smaller aircraft from flying in the protected area.

Police said the plan is a major drone operation designed to keep the skies secure while normal air traffic can continue elsewhere. Inspector Matthew Wilkinson, the force’s airspace commander, said the operation is significant and will be resourced according to the level of threat and risk presented by the event. Officials emphasised that local residents and businesses will be kept informed as the airspace measures are implemented.

The drones involved include the DJIM 30T model, which is already used by officers for tasks such as missing person inquiries and warrants. Each aircraft can fly up to 120 metres (about 400 feet) and stay aloft for around 30 minutes before a replacement is launched to maintain coverage. Protests are planned by the Stop Trump Coalition, with demonstrations expected in central London on the first day and another near Windsor Castle.
