Unison warns of autumn strikes over NHS worker transfers plan
Unison has warned ministers that autumn strike action could arise if NHS trusts press ahead with transferring support staff to subsidiary companies. The union has tabled a motion for debate at the TUC Congress in Brighton.
Unison said outsourcing plans conflict with Labour’s pledge before the election to bring privatised public services back in-house. “Labour promised to bring workers on private contracts back into public services, but ministers are acting the opposite,” said Christina McAnea, the union’s general secretary.
She added that the NHS depends on porters, cleaners and other support staff to run hospitals safely and efficiently. “The NHS needs to be rebuilt, not dismantled and parcelled off to the lowest bidder.” The union warned that any trusts moving staff to subsidiary companies should expect opposition and potential strike action.
