Firefighters are calling on the government to boost funding for the fire and rescue service as it braces for Bonfire Night incidents. The Fire Brigades Union said there has been a sharp rise in fires across the UK in recent years, with damage to property among the consequences.

FBU general secretary Steve Wright said: “The fire and rescue service is on its knees after another round of deadly funding cuts, and firefighters are working to save lives under more pressure than ever.” He added: “Latest figures show a dramatic increase in serious fire incidents, with outdoor fires rising by over 50%.” The union noted that responses to major wildfire incidents have stretched services, and the loss of one in five firefighter posts since 2010 has reduced fire cover and resilience, which means fire engines may take longer to reach incidents—every second counts. The FBU also called on the Government to tax the ultra rich to fund vital public services. The call is part of a broader plea ahead of the Budget.

The union said the Budget should include a progressive wealth tax to fund the fire and rescue service, as it seeks a long‑term funding plan ahead of Bonfire Night commitments.
