Ellie Goldstein, a CBBC actress and the first contestant with Down’s syndrome on the main Strictly Come Dancing series, has been eliminated, making her the fifth contestant to leave the competition. Goldstein, 23, and her dance partner Vito Coppola faced a dance-off with Balvinder Sopal, 46, and Julian Caillon, 30, after finishing bottom of the combined judges’ and public vote in Sunday’s results show.

For Halloween week, Goldstein and Coppola performed a tango to Abracadabra by Lady Gaga, while Sopal and Caillon danced a rumba to Stay by Shakespears Sister. The panel saved Sopal and Caillon, who had earned 28 points on Saturday for a performance described as full of character by judge Craig Revel Horwood.

After the result, Coppola said he was proud and that Ellie had changed his life, while Goldstein said she had enjoyed dancing with him and thanked him for his kindness. Mencap chief executive Jon Sparkes said Ellie had shown what people with a learning disability can achieve when given the spotlight; he added that Vito had demonstrated patience and kindness. Earlier, Lewis Cope and Katya Jones achieved the series’ first perfect score for their couple’s choice routine to Creep by Radiohead. Sunday’s show featured Cat Burns performing How To Be Human, with a routine from Michelle Tsiakkas and Nancy Xu, and a Monsters’ Ball group dance by the professionals to keep with the Halloween theme. Strictly Come Dancing returns on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Saturday 8 November at 6.25pm; the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment will perform on the results show to mark Remembrance Sunday; Goldstein and Coppola will join Strictly: It Takes Two on Monday at 6.30pm on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer.
