Two men born in Britain are suspected of carrying out the knife attack on a high‑speed train travelling from Doncaster to London King’s Cross, police have said. The British Transport Police said two people remain in a life‑threatening condition after the incident, which led to the service stopping at Huntingdon station.

Police identified the suspects as aged 32 and 35. One is described as Black British and the other as a British national of Caribbean descent. They are being held in separate police stations for questioning. A major incident was declared, and officers arrested them within minutes of the 999 call after the 6.25pm service was halted at Huntingdon.

Police said there is nothing to suggest the attack was terrorism at this stage. Armed officers and paramedics attended Huntingdon station, and one suspect is believed to have been tasered before arrest. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood praised the bravery of staff and passengers and said the incident is not being treated as terrorism. The attack is understood to have begun shortly after the London North Eastern Railway service left Peterborough, with disruption expected on several East Coast Main Line routes and travel advice issued. Huntingdon station remained cordoned off on Sunday morning, with the A1307 road closed and several police vehicles on site. Witnesses described a man with a large knife and passengers taking cover in toilets as the incident unfolded.
