Child dies after hazardous materials incident at east London flat
A child died after a hazardous materials incident at a flat in east London, the London Fire Brigade said. Fire crews were called to a property on Barking Road, Upton Park, Newham, after two adults and two children were taken to hospital with a smell of chemicals. One of the children later died in hospital. Around 12 people were evacuated from nearby homes as a precaution.
Specially trained firefighters carried out a sweep of the property, checked for hazardous materials and ventilated the scene. The first call reporting the incident was logged at 13:18 and crews were stood down by 16:23.
The Metropolitan Police, in coordination with the London Fire Brigade, are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
