Prunella Scales dies aged 93, family says
Prunella Scales, best known for her role as Sybil in Fawlty Towers, has died aged 93. The actress died peacefully at home in London yesterday, her family said. In a statement, the family noted she had a career spanning almost seven decades and that she spent her final days at home. She was watching Fawlty Towers the day before she died. She was married to Timothy West for 61 years; he died in November 2024. She is survived by two sons, a stepdaughter, seven grandchildren and four great‑grandchildren. The family thanked those who cared for her at the end of her life.
Scales had vascular dementia diagnosed in 2013. Among her other roles were Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett’s A Question of Attribution, and a 1973 collaboration with Ronnie Barker in Seven Of One for the BBC. This year marked 50 years since Fawlty Towers first appeared on screen.
