Rio de Janeiro is set to become a hub of climate action as the Earthshot Prize prepares to stage its ceremony in Brazil, organisers said. The Earthshot Boulevard was unveiled in central Rio on Monday in partnership with the Eleven Eleven Foundation, featuring art installations and messages urging climate action. It marks the first time the prize has opened a public space for people to engage with the event.
The boulevard runs from the Museum of Tomorrow to Pier 3, the site of the Earthshot Summit. Among the displays is Cool Globes, a collection of globe-shaped sculptures by different artists designed to illustrate climate solutions. Visitors can buy Earthshot Coffee, made from sustainable Macaw beans with oat milk and served in cups coated with seaweed and designed for recyclability. The boulevard forms part of Rio’s preparations to be named Earthshot City on 2 November, with immersive art, performances, branded airport signage and flags along key routes.
More than 600 drones will illuminate Ipanema Beach on 4 November during the lead-up to the awards. Prince William, who founded the prize in 2020, is due to travel to Rio for the ceremony and to join world leaders at Cop30 in Belem in the Amazon. Performers include Kylie Minogue, Shawn Mendes and Gilberto Gil. Earthshot Prize chief executive Jason Knauf said the partnership with the Eleven Eleven Foundation would be more than a collaboration, describing it as an opportunity to unite climate leaders and communities to drive action. Wendy Abrams, founder of the Eleven Eleven Foundation, said the partnership reflects what Cool Globes has always been about: bringing people together through art to inspire change. Rio mayor Eduardo Paes said the collaboration would help reimagine iconic spaces and position the city as a global symbol of optimism and climate action during the Earthshot Summit. Seu Jorge said he was excited to be involved and that the event would showcase Brazil’s energy and the transformations underway at the Museum of Tomorrow.
