Aviva says motor claims linked to rodent damage rose by 28% in 2024. The insurer notes damage ranging from nests inside engine compartments to wiring that has been chewed and seatbelts gnawed. The average 2024 claim stood at £2,494, while one case cited by Aviva exceeded £24,000, resulting in a write-off for interior and exterior damage.
Average costs for rodent-related damage also climbed, by about 11% from 2023 to 2024, with the 2023 average recorded as £2,253. Common types of damage include nests in engine areas and behind airbags, along with chewed wiring and harm to dashboard sensors, batteries, suspension systems and gear mechanisms. Other reported issues include gnawed seats, seatbelts, footwells and carpets, and fuel and water leaks caused by rodents biting fuel tanks and piping. The insurer notes the trend is more prevalent in larger cities where population density, drainage networks and ageing infrastructure create suitable conditions for vermin.
James Driscoll, Aviva’s motor claims manager, said many people recognise rodents can damage property but may not realise they can affect cars too. He added that in winter, mice and rats seek warmer places to nest and can squeeze into small gaps such as grilles, vents or open windows. If signs of gnawing or suspected rodent damage are observed, drivers should contact their insurer. Coverage varies by provider, so policy details should be reviewed. Aviva also offered prevention tips: remove food and crumbs from the vehicle; avoid parking near bins or tall grass and, if possible, park in a secure location such as a garage; if parking in open areas, consider mesh covers or protective wraps to block access to the engine bay; and when opening the bonnet to top up washer fluid, inspect the engine bay for signs of wear or rodent activity.
