Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton was found hanged at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, Stockport Coroner’s Court was told during a brief first hearing into his death. The inquest was opened and adjourned until 20 March next year. Hatton, 46, was discovered unresponsive by his manager, Paul Speak, on the morning of 14 September. He had last been seen by his family on 12 September, when he appeared well.

Coroner Alison Mutch said the provisional cause of death is hanging. Hatton was identified to police by Mr Speak and lived alone at the address; he was described as a boxing trainer and company director. Mr Speak attended the hearing on behalf of the family, and about 20 reporters were present.

Tributes flowed from across boxing and sport after Hatton’s death. A Manchester favourite known as ‘The Hitman’, he had a long career and was seen as a popular figure on both sides of the Atlantic. His family said he was in a good place and had plans for the future, including a comeback fight in Dubai in December. Hatton had previously spoken about mental health struggles, including drink and drugs and past suicide attempts after his retirement.
