The BBC’s Our BBC, Our Future questionnaire shows 38% of viewers think the broadcaster is ineffective at being independent from the Government, while 43% say it is effective. The survey drew 872,701 responses and was launched in March this year. The BBC said 91% of respondents believed independence from the Government of the day is important.

BBC director-general Tim Davie said the results show audiences want an independent BBC that delivers high-quality programmes and content they can trust. ‘The results of the questionnaire are clear – our audience wants an independent BBC, delivering high-quality programmes and content that they can trust; that tells the stories that matter to them and that reflect their lives. We are here to deliver for audiences across the UK and we will be taking everything they have told us with us as we shape the future of the BBC.’

Other findings show 51% believe the BBC is currently effective at reflecting different parts of the UK, while 24% regard it as ineffective; 76% say reflecting the UK’s diversity is important. Sixty-four percent say the BBC provides a valuable public service, with 26% saying it is ineffective. Fifty-nine percent say the corporation offers something for everyone, with 24% saying it is ineffective. Fifty-seven percent view the BBC as an asset for the UK abroad, while 21% view it as ineffective. Seventy-three percent say the BBC offers high-quality digital services, with 10% saying it is ineffective. More sport coverage was requested by more than half of current viewers, and more than 40% of all respondents want more drama and documentary series, while 67% want to keep news coverage at its current level. Eighty-three percent said it is important that the core mission to inform, educate and entertain continues. The BBC said the results will play a central part in planning for the future and has invited respondents to answer follow-up questions.
